The Officers Training Corps (OTC), the forerunner of the CCF, existed as early as 1908.
The leftmost badge is the original Dorchester School OTC worn between circa 1910 (the OTC was recorded as being approved as a Junior
Division OTC in 1910 although it may have been a cadet corps beforehand) and 1940 when the OTCs were re-titled Junior Training Corps
(JTCs) and many adopted the local county regiment cap badge.
There was a brass OTC shoulder title which was worn on the epaulettes
whilst the JTC one was cloth and worn at the top of the sleeve.

In 1940 the JTC and later the CCF Army Section were part of the Dorsetshire Regiment (second left cap badge above).
The Dorsets became the Devonshire and Dorsetshire Regiment in 1958 (third left badge), although I have no reports
of the CCF cap badge changing at that time. In 1971, the Devon and Dorsets became the Wessex Regiment (right badge),
part of the Territorial Army, and the CCF cap badges were changed accordingly.
The Air Training Corps (ATC) was started in 1948 by Mr SA Fox, and later became the RAF Section.
The Royal Navy Section was started in 1956 by Mr R Tompsett.
Here are various photos gathered in recent years from numerous sources.
The quality of some is somewhat below par, due in many cases to the copying process employed
(e.g. re-photographing a hand-held original). If owners are able to make a better digital copy
sometime and forward it to me, I would be very grateful.

Note that, whereas we wore black berets from the early 1950's, we see here the earlier bonnets made of the same

Joe Hopewell was a PT master, a real old soldier who had served in the 14th/20th King's Hussars.
Note the unusual pattern of his tunic.

Sometime in the mid-'50s, the Inspecting Officer at the Annual General Inspection noticed that one cadet was proudly wearing a medal,
and enquired about it. The cadet in question was GF Stansfield, and the medal was the Coronation Medal which he was awarded for singing
in the choir at the coronation ceremony in 1953.
I was reminded of this story when watching the BBC TV programme Antiques Roadshow on 10 June 2012. Another chorister was showing his medal
(see above) as well as the Order of Service, on which he had collected the autographs of many of his fellow chorister. The signature of
GF Stansfield can be seen towards the lower left corner.

One was at HMS Heron, the Fleet Air Arm base near Yeovil.
It involved building a Bailey bridge and mucking around with explosives (!)
- no, we didn't demolish the bridge afterwards - and I received a cloth badge showing an exploding grenade for attaching to my uniform.

Geoff Standring writes:"There was at least one other CCF contingent present at that camp.
I remember that we were billeted a long way away from the centre of the action on the outskirts of the camp.
The powers that be wanted to test the station security, so they asked us to see if we could obtain anything
that might be a security risk. As a result, we managed to get into the control tower at night by opening a
window via the fanlight. We managed to fill a sack with restricted and secret documents from various sources.
I wont say we were thanked because it was obviously an embarrassment to the senior officers, but we heard
that the station security officer was sacked!"
Here now are the photos of the 1958 Annual CCF Inspection - all taken by Nick Boultwood.
The date was 12th of June, and the Inspecting Officer was Maj-Gen Duncan.
These were originally shown on my first website.
Under each, I have put the names of people that I can recognise and remember.
The size of the group in many of these photos is often quite large and the clarity is not the best,
making identification more difficult.
The numbers are just for my reference purposes - please quote in correspondence.

Here are the only colour pictures I have, or have seen, taken during my time at
Hardyes. They were the results of my early attempts with using and processing colour slide film (Ferraniacolor,
if you're interested).
58 - This one shows Drum Major Geoff Hunter and his Corps of Drums.
59 - This is a rather blurred photo of our Denis Howe plus instructor flying a Tiger Moth over the School fields.
Denis recently emailed me:-
"I had done a Flying Scholarship at Christchurch and I managed to
persuade the powers that be, to let me and my instructor (a maniac by the
name of Jack Stone) fly down and give an aerobatic display. Needless to
say, it was Jack who was the pilot in charge for the tricky stuff...
He really knew how to make a Tiger perform and we did a whole series of wild
things - starting the display routine with a spin, a recovery and then into
a double loop... well, that got everyones attention!
"We then went on to do
slow rolls (at low level), falling leafs etc etc and at the end buzzed the playing fields -
'Swampy' Brookfield (our biology teacher and keen photographer) attracted Jack's attention.
Jack spotted him standing in the middle of the playing fields, taking pictures - so Jack gave
him the chance for a unique close up of a Tiger Moth approaching at 5ft above the ground. I don't know if
Swampy managed to click the shutter at the right moment, but as we passed incredibly low over him, he fell
backwards - giving the impression that we'd hit him! - but we hadn't - and he quickly jumped to his feet
to the obvious relief of everyone watching!
"I believe that Swampy's wife was there and was very pregnant
- so I was very relieved that the shock hadn't affected her.
The next day, Mr Hamilton, the Headmaster asked me if my mother was
watching, and I replied that, no she wasn't able to be there - to which he
replied 'Well, just as well she wasn't...'"
60 & 61 - Finally we see two photos of a Royal Navy helicopter from 781 Naval Air Squadron at Portland
demonstrating a simulated rescue operation.
Geoff Standring's photos from our 1959 RAF Summer Camp to RAF Wildenrath, Germany, which was arranged by a
fortunate liaison between Fl/Lt JO Roberts and the father of
the (3) brothers Witt in Southfields, who was a Wing Commander in the RAF.

I say 'luckless' because I remember Ian Diffey brought back a bottle of red
wine in his suitcase, which was broken somewhere in transit. Also, during the camp, it was rumoured that
Joe Roberts had placed a crate of beer at the top of the nearby high hill, and the first of us to climb it next
morning could keep the beer. Chris Witt was up at the crack of dawn, climbed the hill, and upon return
revealed that it had all been a hoax.

68 - Jack Crewe sent in this photo and the two below, saying:
"The RAF were offering the opportunity for school pupils to apply for scholarships which would enable them to learn to fly.
I duly attended an interview at Hornchurch and received the award which would take up most of the 1960 summer holidays.
There was an airfield at Purewell near Christchurch, and in one corner of the field was the privately owned Christchurch Aero Club.
We were trained on Tiger Moth biplanes [see photo above - this is also possibly the aircraft shown in Photo 57 above] and during
the course we were expected to learn to fly solo, which included rolling, looping and spinning as well as flying cross-country to
other aerodromes.The cockpits were open and take-off speed was 57 mph!
"I completed the course and became hooked on flying. I continued
to work part-time at Christchurch Aero Club on duty at the pumps for the remainder of the holidays, being paid for my work with two
hours free flying per week. One duty included swinging propellers to start the engines!
"Continuing at weekends during the autumn, I earned sufficient time to learn to convert to flying Austers [see Photo 67 below]
and also a third type of light aircraft.
"During Easter 1961, I was working at the Aero Club when two Hardye's pupils came across. They were taking a gliding course at a
gliding club in another corner of the field [see Photo 68 below] and told me that a third pupil had failed to turn up for his
course and his place was vacant. When I arrived back at school at the end of the holidays they were surprised that I had a gliding
licence as well!!

The upper one shows Mark boasting Corporal's stripes and the drum insignia of the leader of the Corps, with
Gavin Easton to his immediate right. Drum Major Sherring is on the left, with Under Officer Keith Warnock (with sword) next to him,
and David Lacey behind. RSM Johnson has his back to the camera on the left. The Inspecting Officer, Major General F D Fanshawe,
is taking a keen interest in the list of tunes to be played which were all kept marked on a slip of paper attached to the drumhead.
79 - This second photo was taken in the same year and shows the Corps of Drums marching past the then 'new' science
block.

"I was at School from '60-'63 as a boarder at Heathcote, and in '63 was Under Officer of the CCF.
I am the guy out front carrying the drawn sword, and leading the RN section is PO Keen who played rugby for England. This was the only occasion in my life when I have paraded with a drawn sword as
when I left school I joined the Royal Army Medical Corps who do not draw swords on parade. I retired as a Lt Col in '99 after a very rewarding
career in the Army."

The 1969 School magazine "The Durnovarian" included an article reporting on the parade, as follows:
ANNUAL GENERAL INSPECTION
In this, Hardye's Quater Centenary year, a special effort was made by the Combined Cadet Force to make this occasion a memorable one. Unfortunately, however, the weather did not prove to be on our side, and 23rd May brought with it steady rain. In spite of this, the activities continued.
At 10.45 a.m. the Parade formed up, having marched on to the accompaniment of the 1st Battn. Royal Welsh Fusiliers Band. The Inspecting Officer, General Sir Charles Harington, K.C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C. arrived at 11.00 hrs., and took the general salute. The Fusiliers played a variety of tunes, whilst General Harington inspected the contingent. The march past in line followed, the C.C.F. then reforming in open order. A fly-past by a Chipmunk aircraft piloted by Cadet Haine was then due to take place but, owing to the weather conditions, had to be called off. The parade continued with the Advance in Review Order and with the General Salute. The March Off in column heralded the end of the morning's activities. The parade had been conducted by Under-Officer Churcher and R.S.M. Buckland.
After the lunch interval, the Red Arrows team gave a truly breathtaking display. It was unbelievable that this was the display designed for unfavourable conditions. This event was a double honour for the school. Not only were we the first school to be recognised in this fashion, but also an Old Boy, Flt.-Lieutenant R. Duckett, was a member of the team.
At 1350 hrs., a colourful scene took place. This was a Guard Mounting Ceremony, undertaken in four sections. First of these was a group dressed in the uniforms of the 39th Foot, to commemorate the Battle of Plassey in 1757. This was the first engagement in which an Old Boy is known to have taken part. Second came seven cadets in the uniforms first worn by the cadet force in 1904. This was the foundation year
of the school O.T.C. and the force of that time numbered seven. Sections three and four represented the most recent additions to the Combined Cadet Force in the form of the Naval and R.A.F. sections. A great deal of hard work went into this part of the day's proceedings, and all those who were involved in any way must be thanked.
A Royal Naval Helicopter Display followed. An air-sea rescue operation was enacted by a ""Whirlwind"" helicopter, a ""Wasp"" machine also being present.
Next came an Aerial Ropeway Race between the Royal Naval and Royal Engineers sections. This preceded Silent Drill by the R.A.F. section and an Assault Course Race between all three sections. Both the Aerial Ropeway and the Assault Course Races were won by the Royal Naval section.
Throughout the day, various demonstrations were manned by members of the Regular Forces, all arms being represented.
At 1520 hrs., the Inspecting Officer gave his address. In this he congratulated everyone upon the effort made, commenting that drill on wet grass was at all times a difficult task. He was then presented with a set of Commemoration goblets by Mr. Frank Mills, President of the Old Boys' Association.
An extremely successful day was then concluded by the Royal Welsh Fusiliers' Band who played, amongst others, the Sunset Hymn, and Beating Retreat.
This occasion certainly proved itself worthy of the traditions of Hardye's School, and is one that will not readily be forgotten by all those present.

103 - A loch, the Loch? Not sure exactly. There's a lot of water up there.
104 - Proof we were there. Look it up on Google maps. This junction is quite a way from the base. I'm pretty sure we walked in and out.
105 - The camp itself. The Nissen huts were used for sleeping. The larger structure contained the dining hall.
106 - Rob Hall sucking on a tube of condensed milk as supplied with the 'compo' rations we were issued for the hike. Great stuff!

109 - Stopping for a smoke break. The smokers had an advantage as the smoke kept the ginormous mosquitos at bay. Bill Meaden, I think, in the centre, and Charlie Edwards on the right. Can't remember the other two guys.

The cavers are the army section of the CCF caving group who discovered and mapped Ariel cave on Portland the entry to which started with a 30 odd foot abseil down a 100+ foot cliff face in order to swing into a small entrance (all great fun at the time)!
