For the following anecdote, I am much indebted to Roger Taunton-Rigby:
[Photo 18 is] of me is winning the mile. I took it very easy as I had to beat Ali in the half mile which followed. He gave me the hardest race I ever had on the school track, as evidenced by how knackered I looked [in photo 22] ('Jack' Dawe of Harold Wilson fame was third). In the photo of the start [photo 21] you can see that I knew I had to get to the first turn, hold the lead and run his finishing speed out of him. It worked. We clashed our spikes twice on the way round and I thought the home straight would never end.
Roger 'Jack' Dawe (another good Locke man) did not start at Hardye's with us but joined my class in middle school, probably IVa. His father was the headmaster of the secondary modern school, as it was then. He was very bright and got a place at Cambridge after only one year in the sixth form! To everyone's dismay he accepted instead of doing the more civilized thing and waiting a year until Oxford offered him a place! He got a double first and his first job was as Harold Wilson's private secretary. He is all over the web and apparently carved out a brilliant career as a government expert on higher education.
